► Estado del N de Alemania, en la parte S de Jutlandia; 15 727 km2 y 2 626 127 h. Cap., Kiel. Patatas, trigo y forrajes. Bovinos y porcinos. Pesca. Sal. Astilleros, fundiciones de hierro, maquinaria, tabaco y tejidos. Activo comercio.

Región histórica y estado (pob., est. 2002: 2.804.249 hab.) del noroeste de Alemania.

Ocupa 15.729 km2 (6.073 mi22) de superficie, que abarca la mitad sur de la península de Jutlandia, isla Fehmarn situada en el mar Báltico y varias islas del archipiélago de las Frisias. Su capital es Kiel. Desde el s. XV, tanto Dinamarca como Suecia, el Sacro Imperio romano, Prusia y Austria reclamaron reivindicaciones y contrademandas de los antiguos, los antiguos ducados de Schleswig y Holstein. Los daneses los cedieron a Prusia y Austria en 1864, y en 1866 ambos territorios se incorporaron a Prusia (ver cuestión de Schleswig-Holstein). En 1920, se le otorgó la franja septentrional de Schleswig fue otorgada a Dinamarca. Después de la segunda guerra mundial, la parte alemana de Schleswig-Holstein paso a ser un estado de Alemania Occidental. Entre sus industrias cuentan las de construcción naval, ingeniería eléctrica, papel, textiles, prendas de vestir y turismo.
